Exploring Sexual Identities for Transmac Folks

Transmen and transmasculine individuals who were assigned female at birth but identify as male or masculine (teransmasculine), may have a range of sexual identities and preferences. However, navigating sexual identity can be challenging for transmasculine due to a range of factors, including societal norms and expectations, dysphoria, and discrimination. To navigate these challenges, it’s important for transmasc folks to seek out supportive communities, communicate their needs and boundaries with their partners, and prioritize self-care and self-acceptance in their journey towards self-discovery and empowerment. Sexual identity can be a complex and fluid aspect of a person’s identity, and this is no different for transmen and transmasculine folks. Transmasculine people may experience a range of sexual identities and orientations, and these identities can shift and evolve over time Here, we will explore the intersection of transmasculinity and sexual identity, and offer some ways to navigate these challenges.

Understanding Sexual Orientation:
Sexual orientation refers to an individual’s attraction to others based on their gender identity. For transmasc folks, understanding their sexual orientation can be complex, as they may experience dysphoria around their assigned female at birth body or genitalia, and may have a range of feelings and preferences when it comes to partners. It’s important for transmen and transmasculine folks to explore their sexual identity at their own pace. Transmen may experience shifts in their sexual identities as they undergo gender transition. For example, a transman who previously identified as a lesbian may now identify as bisexual, pansexual, or even straight. These shifts can be confusing and challenging to navigate, especially if the transmasculine individual is already in a relationship or has a social circle that is not accepting of LGBTQ+ identities.

Dating & Relationships:
Transmen and transmasc folks may face unique challenges when it comes to dating and relationships. They may feel pressure to disclose their trans status early on in relationships, or may worry about rejection or discrimination from potential partners. The dating pool for transmasculine individuals drastically changes for many due to transition. Additionally, transmen and transmasculine people may experience dysphoria or discomfort around sexual activity, which can impact their ability to engage in intimate relationships. It’s important for transmasculine folks to prioritize their own comfort and safety in relationships, and to seek out partners who are accepting and supportive of their gender identity.

Exploring Sexual Expression:
Transmen and transmasculine individuals may also have unique preferences when it comes to sexual expression. Some may feel more comfortable with certain sexual acts or positions than others, while others may have specific preferences around partner gender or identity. It’s important for transmasc folks to explore their sexual preferences and express themselves in a way that feels authentic and empowering.

Navigating Attraction to Multiple Genders:
Transmen and transmasculine people may find that their attraction to different genders changes as they transition and become more comfortable with their own gender identity. Some transmasc people may find that their attraction to different genders shifts over time, while others may find that they are attracted to multiple genders at the same time. This can be a confusing and challenging process, but it is important for transmen amd transmasc folks to give themselves space to explore and define their own sexual identities in a way that feels authentic to them.

Stigma and Discrimination:
Unfortunately, transmen and transmasc folks may face stigma and discrimination when it comes to their sexual identity. They may be subjected to transphobia or homophobia from society at large, or may experience discrimination within the LGBTQ+ community itself. For example, a transman who identifies as gay may experience discrimination from other gay men who do not see him as a “real” man or who are uncomfortable with his gender identity. Transphobia and homophobia can create barriers to finding partners who are accepting and supportive, and can create challenges in forming and maintaining relationships. It’s important for transmasc folks to seek out supportive communities and resources, and to prioritize their own wellbeing and safety.

Navigating Sexual Health:
Finally, transmen and transmasc people may face unique challenges when it comes to sexual health. Hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgeries can impact sexual function and pleasure, and it is important for transmen and transmasculine folks to have access to appropriate medical care and resources to support their sexual health. Hormones can also impact a person’s sexual desires and interests. For example, testosterone therapy may increase a transmasc person’s sex drive or cause changes in sexual function. These changes can also impact a transmasculine person’s sexual identity and relationships, and it’s important for transmasc people to communicate these changes with their partners and seek support when needed. Additionally, transmen may face barriers to accessing sexual health resources due to discrimination or lack of knowledge among healthcare providers. It is important for transmasc folks to advocate for their own sexual health needs and to seek out providers who are knowledgeable and supportive.

Transmaculine people may have a range of sexual identities and preferences, but navigating sexual identity can be challenging due to a range of factors. It’s important for transmasculine individuals to understand their own sexual orientation and preferences, prioritize their own comfort and safety in relationships, explore their sexual expression in a way that feels authentic and empowering, and seek out supportive communities and resources. By doing so, transmasc folks can live fulfilling and satisfying sexual lives while staying true to their gender identity.

*The term Transmasc is used as a umbrella term to emcopass those folks that identify as gender fluid, genderqueer and non binary masculine leaning and includes transmen as well.
